Literal translation for this proverb could be: “The hole of lie is not deep”.

To lie is to not tell the truth or to speak in a way that diverts one from the truth. People may lie for a reason or for no reason at all. No matter why people lie, it comes a time when the truth appears, and the lie cannot cover it anymore.

This should leave the liar ashamed and, often he/she loses the respect of others and the people that have been lied to lose confidence/trust in the liar.

Haitian people say this proverb when they suspect that someone is lying to warn him/her that the truth will appear very soon. They also say this when they discover the truth about something they have been lied to about. It is also a way to encourage people to always tell the truth.

Let us make an effort to always tell the truth, not only to preserve our reputation, others' trust and our dignity, but also to protect others from being disappointed at us for lying.

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. Ephesians 4:1
