Why our Ministry at CERMICOL Matters

In the early days of Haiti Awake, God put it on both Steeve’s heart and my heart to begin an outreach at CERMICOL, a prison for juvenile offenders in Delmas.   Gaining access to the prison was a long, tedious process, but through persistence and gaining trusting relationships with those in authority, we’ve been able to establish weekly ministry at the facility.

When I came across this video that is linked below, I was struck by its accuracy - and it’s ability to show you, our friends, the inside of a place that has become dear to our hearts, as well as part of our weekly routine.

I encourage you to take 15 minutes to learn about the Haitian gang problem, the way it impacts youth, and what happens when young people make choices that are difficult for them to reverse.

To those who have given so generously to make sure this ministry continues, we thank you. You may never see or know the impact of your gifts, but we can assure you the young men we see each week are blessed and encouraged by your kindness.

Why does our ministry at CERMICOL matter?

Our ministry at CERMICOL matters because this ministry helps us fulfill Matthew 25:36 by visiting them, establishing a true relationship with them, and letting them know there is hope in Jesus.  We point them to Jesus with church on Sunday and during English class weekly.   We also do this by being Christ’s love in action as we provide for their physical needs at least once per month.

The ministry at CERMICOL matters because I believe that change can be made by any little bit of difference to make life become better. First of all when we share God’s love with them through the Gospel, I believe that we are making a huge impact into their lives. And also with the English class that we teach weekly with them, I consider that it’s a glimpse of hope to arm the children with knowledge so they can see the value in education.
Our ministry at CERMICOL is eye-opening to show that options really exist when we are able to counter different obstacles in life and that we should always choose the right path.
I am thankful that God put Haiti Awake on their way to contribute for a better future in the life of the boys.

By seeing what we do at CERMICOL, everyone can see a ‘why’ by the results they will bring. First of all, we do all of this to share the love of Jesus and to bring hope in the life of those that are in a limited area and put aside from society and, most of all, have been in the wrong way. Prisoners do not have any rights. It’s the best way to show what grace means and help them think about something else from being in prison, rejected away from society.
