As I reflect on my short visit to Haiti this month, my heart is filled with thankfulness to our Father who makes a way when there seem to be no way. Through the years at Haiti Awake, we have seen Him do exceedingly abundantly above all that we could have asked or imagined. We have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows together.
This month we gathered to celebrate a high - Vorb’s graduation. Though many obstacles lay in the path from Wilmington, NC to Port-au-Prince, I am so grateful our God can make a way when there is no way.
To those of you who sponsor children in our program, I want to tell you. Your love and support is making a difference in individual lives. I was able to spend time with the CCS Library classes, and I want you to know the joy in the classroom was abundant.
To those who sponsor the prison ministry at CERMICOL, I want you to know we were able to visit with some of the young men we have known for years. I was also able to meet some new faces. I am always amazed that we can walk away from one of the darkest places in Haiti feeling encouraged in the Spirit by what we have seen and heard.
Vorb’s graduation and graduation party were everything we had hoped they would be as we honored him together. Finishing a four-year degree is a big accomplishment for anyone, but Vorb and his classmates faced challenges far beyond what the normal college student faces. We are so proud of his effort and determination to finish.
I want to end by sharing this story. Some dear friends sent money “just because,” and I had asked the leadership staff to decide how to use it. Each gift was around $30. The staff decided to buy a special treat for the Caradeux library children (donuts) and the English class and music class at CERMICOL (cupcakes).
When donuts were distributed at the end of CCS library time, one girl could not contain her excitement. She took one sprinkle off the donut, put it in her mouth, and savored it. She then wrapped it in a napkin and said to her friend, “I will eat it later. I just want to smell it. It smells so good.” She then held the wrapped donut up to her nose and breathed deeply.
It’s the seemingly small things that can mean the most.
