Pòt an bwa pa goumen ak pòt an fè.

Literal translation for this proverb could be “Wooden door does not fight iron door.”

In Haitian society, we find different classes of people depending on their economic, social, educational, and political position. Everything matters - the connections you have, the position and last name of your parents, your education and even the community you live in. All of this can be in your favor or in your disfavor. They determine your chances and give you opportunities.

Haitian people know that there are some people it would better not to have a process against or be in any kind of fight with. They know that they will lose. The game is unbalanced. And when it happens that the weaker loses, even if they are right, people say that they knew that “wood” cannot fight against “iron”.

Haitian people say this proverb to warn less fortunate people in many aspects about being in any kind of discussion or trouble with some people that are well connected and have money at their disposal to turn the situation in their favor. We also say this proverb when we see the guilty wins against the innocent because of his means.

It’s better to avoid any kind of trouble and search for peace.
